How To Create An E-commerce Dashboard In Google Looker Studio?

Google allows businesses to create e-commerce dashboards in Looker Studio to achieve the same purpose. 

But how to create an e-commerce dashboard in Google Looker Studio?

What is Google Looker Studio?

You can use data from sources such as Shopify stores, Google Sheets, and GA4 to create customized visual reports that you can save, share, and explore for data-driven decisions.

There are two methods to create an e-commerce dashboard in Looker Studio. You can either build a blank report from scratch or use a template.

Create An E-Commerce Dashboard in Google Looker Studio from Blank Report

A Blank report is something you build up from scratch with all the elements necessary to understand your business.

Create the E-commerce Dashboard and Rename It

First, create an e-commerce report and give it an appropriate name to make it easy for you to come back and review it later.

  • Then go to Select Data Source panel > Create A New Data Source, select Google Analytics 4 (Shopify Customer Events), and click Add to Report

* (For the sake of this blog, we are using [Sample] Google Analytics Data from the My data source tab)

  • Rename the Report E-commerce Report.
  • Insert the rectangular shape to create the Header, customize it to your liking, and give it a title by inserting a text box within.

  • Customize the color, font, and other aspects by clicking Text Properties in the menu bar at the top. 
  • Or you may select a theme for the report by clicking and opening the Theme and Layout tab in the menu bar.

Add Data to the E-commerce Report in Google Looker Studio

Let us now add the data we wish to review in our e-commerce report. 

  • Next, click Add a chart > Scorecard, customize its color and other aspects from the Style tab at the right.

  • Right-click the scorecard and choose Duplicate to replicate its stylization.
  • Search Transactions in the Available Fields, then drag it to Metric. Continue the process for Scorecards for
    • Product Detail Views
    • Revenue
    • Average Order Value
    • E-commerce Conversion Rate

  • If desired, switch the Scorecard view to Compact Numbers in the Style tab. 
  • Once you have all the scorecards, arrange them to your liking.

Add Demographics

  • For international e-commerce businesses, add a Geo Map widget from Add a chart to find which countries bring you the revenue.
  • Give the map the title Revenue by Country, search Revenue in the Available Fields, and drag it to Metric
  • Find the cities bringing your e-commerce store the most revenue by adding a horizontal Bar chart. Select Revenue in the metric and City as the dimension.
  • Go to Add a chart and select a Time series chart to see your e-commerce trends, then go to the Chart tab to add the E-commerce Conversion Metric
  • To show the gender distribution of your customers, add a pie chart from Add a chart, then in the Chart tab, choose Gender as the dimension and Sessions as the Metric.

Add Filters 

Make the e-commerce report more dynamic by adding filters to the report to be viewed by the end user for a better understanding of the data. 

  • Add an Auto-date range to the report by clicking the Add quick filter, searching, and selecting Date in the drop-down. 
    • It enables users to select different time frames to view the report. 
  • Add some filter controls to allow the end users to view the data from different angles. 
    • Go to Add a control in the menu bar at the top, click the Drop-down list

  • Then, go to the Control field in the Chart tab select Source / Medium, and keep Sessions as your Metric
  • Use the same method to create filters for 
    • Device Category
    • User Type (New/Returning)

Now that you have successfully created an E-commerce Dashboard in Google Looker Studio, it is time to share it with the relevant personnel. 

Here are a few ways to do so.

  • Download the report as a PDF, with the option for a password-protected version.

  • Share it as a Google document with the Share button above the menu bar.
  • Make a copy within Looker Studio.

Remember

There is no hard and fast rule to use the same metrics as the one discussed in this blog. You need to look for the data and charts that best explain your business and find the right charts to visualize them.
